Radiator Balancing Explained: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide
A clear, practical guide to getting all your radiators heating evenly and efficiently.
If some rooms in your home feel toasty while others stay stubbornly chilly, your central heating may need radiator balancing. With a little time and care, you can often improve comfort and cut wasted energy without touching the boiler.
What radiator balancing means
Balancing is the process of adjusting how much hot water flows through each radiator so they all warm up at a similar speed. Rather than one or two radiators taking most of the heat, you aim to share it fairly across the system.
This is done using the small lockshield valves at the end of each radiator. By opening or closing them slightly, you restrict or increase the flow of water through that radiator compared with the others.
A well balanced system typically gives more even room temperatures, faster warm-up times and can help your boiler run more efficiently, as it does not need to work as hard to overcome big temperature differences.
When it makes sense to balance your radiators
Balancing is particularly useful if you notice some rooms are always slower to heat than others or never reach the thermostat setting. It is also a good follow-up task after certain types of work on your heating.
Consider balancing your system in these situations:
After bleeding several radiators or the whole system
After adding, removing or replacing radiators
After powerflushing or cleaning the system
When you have moved the room thermostat to a different area
If you have recently changed your boiler or pump settings
If your heating has always been uneven since you moved in, there is a good chance it was never properly balanced in the first place.
Tools and safety before you start
You do not need specialist equipment to balance your radiators, just some basic tools and patience. A thermometer can help, but it is not essential for a good improvement.
Adjustable spanner or lockshield valve key

Notepad or phone notes to record your adjustments
Optional: digital thermometer or infrared thermometer
Protective gloves and an old towel
Safety first: radiators and pipework get very hot. Work carefully, use gloves if needed, and avoid leaning on hot metal. If at any point you feel unsure, stop and seek professional help.
Getting to know your radiator valves
Most radiators have two valves, one at each end. For balancing, it is important not to mix them up, as they serve different purposes.
The thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) or manual control is usually the larger, adjustable valve with numbers or a head you can turn. This controls the room temperature and is the one you adjust daily.
The lockshield valve is usually smaller and may have a cover that pulls off. It is often turned with a spanner or small key and is not meant to be adjusted regularly. These are the valves you use to balance the system.
Step-by-step radiator balancing guide
1. Prepare the system
Start by making sure all radiators are working and have been bled recently so there is no trapped air. Check your boiler pressure is within the recommended range and the heating system is switched on and set to a consistent temperature.
Open all TRVs or manual control valves fully by turning them to the highest setting. This removes the TRVs from the equation while you balance using the lockshields.
2. Identify the order your radiators heat up
Allow the heating to run from cold and walk around the house, feeling each radiator from bottom to top. Note which ones get hot first and which lag behind.
Radiators closest to the boiler and pump normally heat up fastest. Those at the far end of the pipework or on higher floors are often slower. Write down a simple list from fastest to slowest.
3. Adjust the hottest radiators first
Turn off the heating and let the system cool slightly so it is comfortable to work on. Start with the radiator that heated up first in your list, usually closest to the boiler.
Remove the cap from the lockshield valve. Using your spanner or key, gently turn the valve clockwise to close it fully, then open it again by a quarter to half a turn. Small movements make a big difference, so go slowly and avoid over-tightening.
4. Work through the rest of the radiators
Move to the next hottest radiator and repeat the process, but open the lockshield a little more than the previous one. As you move further from the boiler, radiators typically need more flow, so their lockshields are opened wider.
For example, your closest radiator might be open a quarter turn, the next one a half turn, then three quarters, and so on. Record how many turns or fractions of a turn you use on each radiator in your notes.
5. Re-test after 10 to 15 minutes
Once you have adjusted every radiator, switch the heating back on from cold. After 10 to 15 minutes, go around the house again and feel each radiator.
They should now warm up more evenly. If some are still racing ahead, slightly close their lockshields. If others are lagging, open theirs a little more. Always wait another 10 to 15 minutes after changes before judging the result.
6. Document your final settings
When you are happy with how the system is performing, write down the final position of each lockshield valve using turns from fully closed as your reference. This makes it much easier to return to a good balance if someone moves a valve or you have future work done.
Finally, reset your TRVs or manual valves to your normal comfort settings in each room.
Common balancing mistakes to avoid
A few frequent errors can undo your hard work or make balancing far more frustrating than it needs to be. Knowing them in advance can save a lot of time.
One is over-tightening lockshields. These valves are delicate and only need gentle turns. Forcing them can damage the valve or even cause a leak. Another is accidentally changing the TRV instead of the lockshield and then wondering why room temperatures have changed drastically.
People also struggle if they attempt to balance a system with deeper faults, such as a failing pump, severe airlocks, or very sludged pipework. Finally, it is easy to chase perfection. Aim for a sensible improvement so rooms heat roughly together, rather than obsessing over exact timings to the minute.
When balancing alone will not solve the problem
Balancing is a fine-tuning task. If you have serious heating issues, it may only offer a small improvement without addressing the root cause. Persistent cold spots even after balancing often point to other faults.
Sludge or debris in radiators and pipework can prevent water flowing properly, in which case a professional powerflush or system clean is usually needed. Blocked or partially closed valves, seized TRVs and faulty zone valves can also stop heat reaching certain areas.
In some homes, the boiler or pump may simply be undersized for the number of radiators and the size of the property. In others, old pipe runs may be poorly designed. These types of problems are best diagnosed by an experienced engineer, often as part of a wider boiler repair or system health check alongside any powerflushing work.
