Frozen Condensate Pipe? How to Thaw It Safely and Prevent It Freezing Again
A frozen condensate pipe can stop your boiler from working, but there are safe steps you can take to thaw it and restore your heating.
A frozen condensate pipe is a common reason for a condensing boiler to stop working during freezing weather. The good news is that the problem can often be identified quickly, and a few safe steps may get your heating running again. However, it is important to avoid unsafe access or electrical risks, and to contact a qualified heating engineer if the fault continues.
What does a condensate pipe do?
Modern condensing boilers produce water as they extract heat from the combustion gases. This acidic wastewater, known as condensate, leaves the boiler through a plastic pipe, usually connected to a household drain or routed through an external wall.
When temperatures fall below freezing, the water inside an exposed section can turn to ice. The blockage prevents condensate from draining away, so the boiler may shut down as a safety measure rather than continuing to operate with backed-up water.
Signs your condensate pipe may be frozen
The external pipe is often a white or grey plastic pipe leading from the boiler to the outside. If you can safely see it from ground level, look for visible icing or a solid blockage, particularly around bends and the pipe outlet.
Inside the property, the boiler may make a gurgling or bubbling sound before locking out. You may also see a fault code, a flashing warning light or a message relating to condensate, ignition or drainage. Some boilers simply stop responding until the blockage has been cleared.

Check the boiler display and manual for the recommended reset procedure. Do not repeatedly reset the appliance if it immediately locks out again, as this suggests the underlying fault has not been resolved.
Safe ways to thaw the pipe
Only attempt to thaw the condensate pipe if it is accessible from ground level and you can work without stretching, climbing or placing yourself near electrical equipment. Never use a ladder in icy or wet conditions, and do not reach over fences, conservatories or other obstacles.
Use warm, not boiling, water and pour it slowly over the frozen section. Boiling water can damage or split plastic pipework, while sudden temperature changes may make the blockage worse. A hot water bottle or a heat pack wrapped in a towel can also be held against the pipe to warm it gradually.
Once the ice has cleared, dry the area with towels and follow the boiler manufacturer's reset instructions. Keep clear of electrical sockets, cables and the boiler casing, and never use a naked flame, blowtorch or unsafe electric heater near the pipe. If water has entered electrical equipment, stop and arrange professional assistance.
Preventing another frozen condensate pipe
Insulation is one of the most useful preventative measures. A qualified installer can fit suitable external pipe insulation that is designed for condensate pipework and cold outdoor conditions. Insulation should cover the exposed run securely, including joints where practical, without blocking the pipe or drain connection.
If the pipe freezes repeatedly, the route may need improving rather than simply adding more insulation. An engineer may be able to increase the pipe diameter, shorten the external section or reroute it internally to a more suitable drain. These changes should not be attempted as a DIY job because the pipe needs the correct fall, materials and connection details.
During prolonged cold weather, leaving the central heating on a low setting can help keep internal pipework warmer. Make sure the boiler has adequate ventilation and that the controls are working correctly, but avoid relying on this measure alone if an external pipe is poorly routed or exposed.
When it is not the condensate pipe
A boiler that stops in winter does not always have a frozen condensate pipe. Other possible causes include an interruption to the gas supply, low system pressure, a failed thermostat, an electrical supply issue or another boiler fault.
Check whether other gas appliances are working, confirm that the boiler has power and look at the pressure gauge if your system has one. Only top up pressure if the manufacturer's instructions explain how to do so and you feel confident. If the fault code does not relate to condensate, or the boiler still will not operate after safe thawing, arrange a professional diagnosis.

A frozen condensate pipe can often be dealt with safely, but repeated freezing may indicate that the pipe layout needs attention. If you are unsure what has caused the breakdown, cannot access the pipe safely or continue to lose heating, avoid taking risks and request a repair visit.
