Boiler Error Codes: What They Mean and When to Call

If your boiler has suddenly stopped working and is flashing an error code, it can be worrying and frustrating, especially on a cold day. Understanding what these codes are trying to tell you helps you stay safe, avoid panic and explain the problem clearly when you speak to an engineer.
What a boiler error code actually is
Modern boilers constantly monitor themselves for faults. When something is not quite right, the boiler will often shut itself down and show a fault code on the display. This is a built-in safety feature, not your boiler being awkward.
Each manufacturer uses its own codes, so the same code on two different boilers can mean completely different things. Rather than memorising every brand and number, it is more helpful to understand the main types of issues that trigger these codes.
Common reasons boiler error codes appear
Most boiler fault codes fall into a few broad categories. The exact code will differ, but the idea behind it is usually similar.
Safety lockout: The boiler has detected a problem and shut down to keep you safe.
Ignition failure: The boiler tried to light the burner, but the flame did not establish properly.
Low water pressure: The central heating water pressure has dropped below the safe operating range.
Fan or flue issue: Gases may not be moving through the boiler and out of the flue as they should.
Sensor or temperature fault: A sensor is reading outside normal limits, or the boiler is overheating.

Write down or take a photo of the error code and the exact letters or numbers shown. Note the boiler brand and model name from the front panel or manual. If you can, also record what the pressure gauge is reading on the boiler.
Pay attention to anything unusual, such as new noises, smells or visible leaks around the boiler or pipework. Let the engineer know whether the fault happens all the time or only when the heating or hot water comes on.
Safe checks you can do before booking a repair
There are a few simple checks most homeowners can safely carry out. These can sometimes get your boiler going again, or at least confirm that it really does need an engineer. Never remove boiler casings or touch anything inside a sealed combustion chamber, as this must only be opened by a Gas Safe or OFTEC registered engineer.
Try a single reset only
Most boilers have a reset button or a reset option on the digital controls. You can usually try resetting the boiler once, following your manual. If it starts and runs normally afterwards, keep an eye on it, but there is no need to keep pressing reset.

Check boiler pressure is in range
On most domestic boilers, the cold system pressure should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar, although your manual will give the exact recommended range. If the gauge has dropped very low, this is likely to trigger a low pressure error code.

Confirm gas and power supply
If your boiler shows an ignition or gas supply related error, first make sure there is power to the boiler and your main gas supply is on. Check other gas appliances such as a hob, and confirm that any external gas meter valve has not been turned off accidentally.
If you suspect a gas supply problem or smell gas, do not try to fix it yourself. Turn off the gas at the meter if safe to do so, open windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency number immediately from a safe place.
Thermostat and controls check
Some fault messages are simply the boiler telling you there is no demand for heating or hot water. Check that your room thermostat is turned up, the programmer is set to “on”, and any batteries in wireless thermostats are working.
Also check that radiator valves are open and any isolation switches near the boiler are on. It sounds obvious, but these simple checks can avoid unnecessary call-outs.
Look for signs of a frozen condensate pipe
In cold weather, boilers that discharge condensate outdoors can show error codes when the condensate pipe freezes. Warning signs include loud gurgling noises, the boiler trying to start then shutting down, and the error appearing only in freezing conditions.
Thawing a condensate pipe can sometimes be done safely by a homeowner using warm (not boiling) water, but only if you are confident and can reach the pipe safely.
Safety boundaries you should never cross
It is important to know where DIY checks stop and professional work begins. Never remove the boiler front cover if it forms part of the sealed combustion chamber, and never try to access burners, gas valves, fans or flue components yourself.
Do not ignore repeated lockouts or keep resetting a faulting boiler so that it will run. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you smell gas or fumes, turn off the boiler, ventilate the area, leave the property and contact the emergency services or gas emergency line right away.

Can I keep using the boiler with an error code?
If your boiler is in lockout and showing a fault code, it is telling you not to use it. You can try a single reset as mentioned above. If that does not clear the fault, or it returns, do not keep forcing it to run.
If the boiler is still operating but briefly displays a warning code then continues, check your manual and arrange an engineer visit as soon as you can. It may still be safe, but it is signalling that attention is needed.
Why does the same code keep coming back?
A recurring boiler error code usually means the underlying issue has not been fixed. Topping up pressure or resetting the boiler may clear the symptom temporarily, but not the cause.
Repeated faults often point to things like leaks, failing components, blocked filters or flue issues. An experienced Gas Safe or OFTEC engineer will have the tools and training to trace and repair the root problem safely.
Is it dangerous if my boiler keeps faulting?
